I’ve been trying to come up with a reason to post for the last couple of hours and honestly can’t think of anything meaningful — or pointless, for that matter — to write about. I briefly considered a condensed biography of Joseph P. Kennedy or some snarky political remarks about creepy Herman Cain (who I seriously can’t stand), but instead I think I’ll waste your time discussing this week’s upcoming routine events plus our plans for Thanksgiving.
The aforementioned routine events include Sam’s final trip to the endodontist on Thursday for root canal on a molar and I’ve got an appointment to see Dr. M on Friday morning to figure out what to do next with my blood sugar. Where Thanksgiving is concerned, once again Sam and I are dining alone at home with food from Boston Market. We’ve grown to love this annual ritual, during which I get to carve a turkey in my bathrobe, eat barefoot in front of the TV and don’t have to share leftovers with ANYBODY.
(Point of reference: I’m the one wearing the bathrobe … not the TURKEY.)
And now for something thoroughly confusing. According to several major news websites it seems that GOP candidate Newt Gingrich — God help us — is rising in the polls. To me, there’s only one possible explanation: this means he’s a little less revolting than everybody else, but certainly not by much. I think somebody needs to remind Republican voters about Gingrich’s extensive list of shortcomings, which includes outrageous arrogance, a terrible first name and the fact that he dumped his former wife when she was in the hospital with cancer.
And now I think I need something to eat. I’ve already had today’s allotted chunk of halva so I’m thinking maybe I’ll make toast or heat a can of soup. (I’d actually prefer sugar-free lemon jello but I don’t have any.) Thank you for reading this.

Why Sundays are almost never crappy.
I totally love Sundays. Aside from the fact that Sam and I get to spend the entire day together it’s also filled with wonderful, unforgettable experiences, such as: 1) I get to sleep until 10:30 if the phone doesn’t ring; 2) there’s a Cowboys game that starts at noon and I’m talented enough to watch TV and fold socks at the same time; and 3) we have a ton of leftovers from Pei Wei for lunch.
For the sports fans among you, the Dallas Cowboys whomped the Buffalo Bills today 44 to 7 and quarterback Tony Romo, pictured at right, was 13 for 13 in the first half with three touchdown passes. The ’Boys made the game look so easy I kept checking to see if the Bills forgot to show up. Regardless, everybody in the stands managed to stay awake while the Dallas Cowboys Pole Dancers — famous for their teeny uniforms and surgically-implanted hair extensions — attempted airborne splits as they dropped from a hovering helicopter over the stadium. (I might be kidding about the helicopter part.) Yee-ha, y’all.
Other Sunday activities included ripping open a bunch of FedEx deliveries that arrived yesterday and finishing a box of halva. Although I definitely love halva, the deliveries were awfully swell, too, and included a package of LED flameless votive candles, a rustic side table with a built-in magazine rack from Kirkland’s (see below), a new red chenille throw from Dillard’s and a bunch of pumpernickel bread machine mixes from the Prepared Pantry.
And now it’s time for dinner even though Sam insists he’s not hungry. Personally, I’m leaning towards a few mozzarella sticks because they’re fast as hell (eight minutes) and foolproof. Sam will probably continue grazing on cashews and dried apricots until his intenstines go kablooey. Thank you for reading this.

Welcome to my world.
Good morning one and all. My sleep pattern — what a surprise — is seriously upside-down again after an unplanned three-hour nap yesterday afternoon. I’m so wide awake right now I could wallpaper city hall. Instead … I decided to create a couple of brilliant new features for the Howdygram, which you’ll notice in the right-hand sidebar. I’ve added a funny quote-of-the-week followed by the Famous Texans gallery. It’s my plan to change the quote every few days so please remember to check back now and then. Thank you. All the best from Sam and me.

Sam, the unexpected genius.
I just spent THREE HOURS trying to troubleshoot my crashed browser. I was working on a post when Firefox had a nervous breakdown and completely corrupted my screen … it got so bad I had to reboot my Mac with the emergency shut-down button. When the desktop relaunched everything seemed fine except for Firefox. All I’d see is a blank white window with a little spinning icon and the word “connecting.”
I trash Firefox altogether and download a fresh copy from their website. Doesn’t work. I repeat the process three more times and still no success. So I give up for a while and continue writing with the other two browsers on my computer … Google Chrome and Safari. Unfortunately, I hate Chrome because the font I use for the Howdygram looks squat and stupid, and I’m not crazy about Safari, either, for exactly the same reason.
I WANT MY FIREFOX BACK.
Finally I decide to try using Time Machine … an amazing Mac application that lets me restore anything on my computer going backwards in time. So I choose November 10 at 1 a.m., select Firefox, click “restore,” and holy crap … IT WORKED! Sam actually suggested that I try this last night when he got home from work and I pretty much ignored his idea until 15 minutes ago. Now I’m so damn excited I want to pole-vault into the bedroom with the big news but probably won’t because I’m not a total idiot. (Just a PARTIAL idiot.)
It’s 3 a.m. and I have to go to bed now and plant a juicy smooch on Sam’s adorable head. Thank you for reading this.

Learning to type with a fork in your hand.
After last night’s insomnia marathon (read post) it was my grand plan to keep a low profile all morning, take a nice long afternoon nap and then go to Kirkland’s to use a thoughtful “happy birthday” coupon they sent me a few days ago … except sometimes plans don’t turn out exactly as you’d expect and my “low profile” scenario got blown out of the water. For instance: 1) Sam and I had to drop in to see my optometrist for an emergency repair this morning after my overpriced trifocals fell apart; 2) we stopped at Denny’s for a late breakfast because their Senior Scrambled Eggs are seriously the best deal in town; and 3) when I woke up from my afternoon nap I had such an uncontrollable craving for Curry Shrimp that I decided to skip Kirkland’s altogether and order dinner from China City.
I am waiting for my delivery as I write this post. It’s not easy to type with a fork in your hand but I’ve always been a quick study. (Ask anybody.)
I’ll probably reschedule Kirkland’s for one day next week. A portrait of our local store in Mesquite appears below for your possible interest. I love spending money here! However, after I finish dinner I think I’ll head over to Garden Ridge to shop for a decorative trunk because I picked out a perfect spot for it in the family room. (This is so much fun I almost can’t stand it.)
Incidentally, let me know if you want to come over and sit on our new sectional. We’re taking reservations by email. Thank you.

Worst. Insomnia. Ever.
I’m not sure what’s going on, but for the last few days I’ve had incredible bursts of energy, jumpy feet and practically no desire to sleep … almost like I’m hopped-up on those “speed” diet pills everybody used to take in the 1960s. It’s 3:30 in the morning and I’m wide awake, pursuing quiet diversions so I won’t disturb Sam … creating a “holiday specials” email campaign to drum up a few new clients for my web design business, reading Steve Jobs’ biography and considering a side trip into the kitchen for some cheese. (Cheese doesn’t make any noise whatsoever.)
The Howdygram would like to wish y’all a very happy Veterans Day. You can either spend a few hours saluting people at random today or stay home to watch the war movie marathon on TCM, which includes such titles as Buck Privates, To the Shores of Tripoli and The Navy Comes Through. To help illustrate this paragraph here’s an excellent photo of my dad when he was in the army.

Thought for the day ... God bless Macy’s.
The truck pulled up half an hour ahead of schedule with two of the nicest delivery men on earth who called me “ma’am” and wiped their feet no less than 15 times. But the most important thing is, our new furniture from Macy’s is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS and I’m so excited I might not let myself sit on the sectional until after the first of the year or possibly Washington’s Birthday. After I jazz up the family room this afternoon — arranging my two new throw pillows, moving a couple of plants and shpritzing fingerprints off the cocktail table — I’ll shoot a picture to include with this post. I don’t know if you’ll be as exhilarated as I am but it wouldn’t hurt to pretend a little for my sake.
As long as I’m on a roll I decided to continue my decorating frenzy by placing orders on Kirklands.com for a pair of extremely terrific candle runners (see below) and on Amazon.com for half a dozen flameless LED votive candles.
The candle runner on the left uses votives; the runner on the right uses full-size 3" pillars. I plan to use flameless LED candles for both because they’re as pretty as the real thing but don’t make a melty mess and last almost forever (120 hours on one battery). Flameless LED candles are my new best friend … and they want to be YOUR best friend, too! You’ll find the best deals on Amazon.com and Wal-Mart.com.
And now … as promised, here’s a portrait of the #1 family room in Texas.
You’ll note the attractive patterned earth-tone pillows on the sectional, our new brown shag accent rug — which Sam nicknamed “Mr. Fluffy” — and several very nice, neatly-arranged green plants. FYI, the sectional looks smaller in this picture than it really is. The side with the left arm is 100" long and the side with the right arm is 115". But you might not care about this.
It was awfully nice of you to drop in today. I have to clean up the kitchen now.

My Wednesday night shopping retrospective.
As promised, here’s a quick recap of my excellent, successful and altogether fulfilling shopping excursion to Garden Ridge. Keep in mind, this is the first time I’ve set foot in Garden Ridge in three years, mostly because the store is roughly the size of South Dakota and difficult to navigate when you have to shlep around with a cane. Lately, however, I’ve been feeling quite mobile and spunky, and spunky people are willing to try just about ANYTHING.
So here’s what I bought: 1) two gorgeous throw pillows and a 5 x 7 super-fluffy dark brown shag accent rug for the family room; 2) a bright red brocade throw pillow for the master bedroom; 3) a red chenille fringed throw; and 4) assorted fabulous snacks for Sam. The fringed throw and assorted fabulous snacks are illustrated below.
As I write this post Sam has joined me here in the study with a bag of the Snyder’s nibblers and a quart of Perrier. He’s in honey mustard heaven, and I put him there.
I’ll be home all day today waiting for Macy’s so please send an email if you want to stop by for a couple of Pirouettes. Thank you.

Shopping, shlepping and carpet dents.
You’re going to see a LOT of me today. The Salvation Army showed up at the crack of dawn — seriously, it was barely 8 a.m. — to haul away our family room furniture, and now there’s really nowhere else for me to hang out except here in the study with you and the Howdygram. Macy’s will deliver our new sectional and chaise tomorrow afternoon.
My number one project in the meantime is to get rid of all the old CARPET DENTS, which offers a perfect segue to the most magical, you-won’t-believe-your-eyes household hint on the planet … MARCY’S SECRET TRICK FOR SUCCESSFUL DENT REMOVAL! Just place a few ice cubes in the dent and let them melt (for however long it takes) at room temperature, then use the tines of an ordinary dinner fork to lift up the flattened carpet fibers.
I’ve been using this technique since the dawn of time (translation: around 1972), and it’s 100% guaranteed to amaze unsuspecting friends and relatives because they’ll NEVER be able to remember where your old furniture used to be! It’s downright SPOOKY!
Also on today’s “do-list” is a junket to Garden Ridge for assorted whatnots … and nobody sells more fantastic whatnots than they do!
There’s a Garden Ridge store barely five minutes from home here in Mesquite. I could lie and tell you that’s why we bought a house here, but you’d figure out that I was just kidding.
Garden Ridge is the size of a Wal-Mart except it’s filled with EXTREMELY CHEAP BUT EXCELLENT HOME DECOR, such as area rugs, throw pillows, pottery, metal art, framed pictures, outdoor furniture and patio goodies, a billion silk plants and trees, kitchen textiles, imitation Tupperware, lamps, sheets, towels, mountains of comforter sets, trunks, genuine plaster busts of Julius Caesar, candles, wonderful smelly potpourri and furniture. I refer you to two photos from their website (below).
This store can be an exhausting experience but I’m willing to give it a shot and shlep around for a couple of hours. Basically, I need something useful to do because there’s zero furniture in the family room so I can’t watch TV. Shopping is good. I figured I’d go around dinner-time when the store isn’t too busy (they’re already advertising holiday hours).
Please stay tuned for a Garden Ridge update later this evening and thank you for reading this.

Travelers have no use for Dallas whatsoever.
Readers of “Travel + Leisure” magazine recently voted for the top 35 foodie cities in America. Dallas shlepped in at number 32, beating only Orlando, Vegas and Anchorage — the only spot on earth for polar bear tacos — and lagging behind just about every other decent city in the country, including San Antonio, Austin and (horrors) Houston.
Even though the barbecue, Tex-Mex, and steak-centered cuisine in Big D isn’t a whole lot different than the food in higher-ranked Austin and San Antonio, voters were way more interested in Dallas’ SHOPPING opportunities, which can be impressive. For people-watching, however, “Travel + Leisure” ranked Dallas DEAD LAST. Apparently nobody wants to look at us, which is fine with me because if you don’t think we’re cuter than a bunch of creepy ALASKANS y’all can just go back to wherever the hell you came from and stay there!
So much for Texas hospitality …
And now a word about AARP — the American Association of Retired Persons — which has turned into an extremely irritating organization. These people never stop mailing special offers I don’t need, never stop sending email and never stop the robo-calls. I joined to support their advocacy efforts for seniors but MOSTLY to get their monthly magazine and a few restaurant discounts … AARP thinks I signed on to become a FULL-TIME ACTIVIST. At least three times a week I get frantic, scare-tactic emails begging for money and asking me to write urgent messages to my congressman or sign another petition.
In addition to three separate requests for money, here are the eight other emails I’ve received from AARP just during the past 48 hours: 1) Stand up and be counted so your congressman won’t vote to cut Social Security and Medicare; 2) budgeting for a cruise; 3) mazel tov, you qualify for a 25% discount from Teleflora; 4) a copy of email #1 in case you were too busy cleaning your dentures to read it the first time; 5) don’t be an idiot … all those free lunch investment seminars are scams; 6) simple tips for gardening indoors and how to buy the best luggage; 7) take our easy food safety quiz; and 8) how to get more from your grocery store coupons.
They’re making me crazy.
And finally, everybody will be excited to know that Dunkin’ Donuts is opening a store in McKinney, Texas … its fifth in the greater Dallas area. Apparently the fact that we already have a donut shop on every street corner — almost outnumbering NAIL SALONS — doesn’t matter, because Dunkin’ Donuts is positive we need one more. Texans just can’t get enough frosted wads of fried dough with sprinkles.
Thank you for reading this.

Hot hands, restless legs and thunderstorms.
Here’s what’s happening at 1 a.m. in Howdygramland. Sam is asleep, there’s light rain falling outside and I’ve got RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME that started a few hours ago along with HOT HANDS. I’m not at all sure what any of this means. I looked up “what do hot hands mean” on Google and the most predominant explanation — seriously — is that I’ve been anointed by God with the miraculous gift of HEALING. This, dear readers, is a pile of crapola, and it’s way more likely that my hot hands are related to a blood sugar issue. In any event, I’ll be awake for a while until the symptoms go away. (If I go to bed like this I’ll drive Sam crazy.) Thank you for putting up with me.
Another big round of thunderstorms is supposed to roll in here around 7 a.m. This is excellent news, to tell you the truth, because we definitely need the rain. All of north Texas is under a stage 3 drought warning with mandatory fines if you screw up any of the rules, so free water from the sky is a welcome sight. Bring it on.
I’ll close this post with my all-time favorite picture of Sam at 18 months old. (He’ll probably kill me for this. Maybe I’ll pretend I don’t know how it happened.)

The best movies for naptime.
Okay, so sue me. The National Weather Service finally got one right and maybe they’re not a bunch of pathological liars after all. A big pile of thunderstorms (see map) started rolling through here about 30 minutes ago, there’s a tornado watch until midnight, and then we’ll start all over again with another round of storms and warnings around 4 a.m. The bright red star on the map indicates Howdygram headquarters in Mesquite. (You can’t see me because I don’t usually stand outside in the rain … not even for YOU.)
I don’t think I’ve ever told you about the three “nap movies” stored on my DVR. I highly recommend the following three titles …
Another good one is The Courtship of Eddie’s Father with Glenn Ford EXCEPT for the scene where Eddie’s goldfish dies and he has a shrieking fit. I also strongly discourage sleeping through The Guns of Navarone or Ben Hur under any circumstances.
I think I’ll eat dinner now. Thank you for reading this.

Sex, lies and religious prophecy.
Sexual harrassment is the elephant in the room for candidate Herman Cain, who thinks he’ll make the story go away by refusing to answer questions. Following a comical debate with Newt — what an annoying name! — Gingrich a few days ago, Cain bullied reporters and yelled at them to shut up because he was “back on message” and would only discuss “issues of interest to the American people.”
I have breaking news for Cain … his despicable past IS interesting to the American people, and if he thinks he can slither out of a scandal like this he’s dead wrong. I mean, these harrassment claims have to be true because media-hound feminist attorney Gloria Allred (see inset, above) — who recently represented all of Tiger Woods’ strippers, cocktail waitresses and hookers — is already in the game with one of Herman’s victims!
Here’s an idea. I’ll order a Godfather’s pizza and everybody can come over to watch the fun.
Weather.com says we’ve got GIGANTIC SEVERE STORMS on the way tonight and they’re already issuing hail, torrential rain and tornado warnings highlighted by Harold Camping’s latest end-of-the-world prophecy.
In case you’re interested, Harold Camping (see inset) is the Barney Fife of end-times religion and tries to terrify people by predicting the exact date of the “rapture.” His last public disgrace occurred on May 21, 2011, when we all woke up the next day and the world was still here (read my earlier post). This confused the crap out of poor Harold. He was so damn positive!

Changing clocks is easier than changing colors.
Since we’re supposed to set our clocks back tonight to end Daylight Savings Time I thought I’d get out of bed to celebrate being an hour younger. This isn’t nearly as much fun as I’d hoped, though … even with a glass of lemonade and the following picture that I found on a website showcasing Photoshop achievements.
You’re looking at a seriously-retouched image of President Obama as a white boy. I don’t know where the hell they found his strange head of hair but I keep thinking Skippy needs a spray tan. Obama definitely looks better as he really is.
Here’s a little more weird crapola. A Canadian dentist named Michael Zuk just spent $31,200 at auction for a creepy old molar that was once extracted from John Lennon. The seller, Dorothy “Dot” Jarlett, was Lennon’s housekeeper when he lived in Surrey, England, and said that Lennon had given her many lovely gifts over the years, including a wallet and a Japanese pearl necklace. Why he thought anybody would want his decayed tooth, however, is inconceivable. Maybe Dr. Zuk will do the right thing and put a crown on it.
All of a sudden I’m really tired so I think I’ll join Sam in dreamland for a few hours. Thanks for stopping by.

Sam and Marcy in Furnitureland.
We did it. We went to Macy’s today and bought ourselves some new family room furniture! It was quite an adventure for me, since this marked my first visit to a mall in THREE YEARS due to a variety of mobility issues. I’m sure Sam will concur that I bounced back beautifully and shlepped myself all over Macy’s 10,000 square foot showroom like a seasoned professional. (Translation: I actually tried to buy everything in sight.)
Our store of choice was Macy’s at Collin Creek Mall in Plano because they have the largest furniture department of all the Macy’s stores in the Dallas metro area. The helpful map below indicates: A) our house in Mesquite; and B) Collin Creek Mall. If you zoom in I’m the one waving my cane just south of I-30.
Here’s what Macy’s will deliver on Thursday, November 10 …
For those of you who care, we wound up with sectional #5 from the post I wrote yesterday except in a slightly lighter color — “stone” — and the fabric is microsuede. We also bought an oversized leather contoured chaise for Sam that’s part heaven, part dentist’s chair. This baby is HUGE. And since everything was on sale we spent $700 LESS than the order we canceled last week at Haverty’s. This made me so deliriously happy I bought us dim sum for lunch at Hong Kong Royal even though we didn’t actually get there until 3 p.m.
First thing Monday I’ll call the Salvation Army and arrange for them to haul away our old furniture — two identical 90-inch leather sofas and a nice end table — unless there’s a deprived Howdygram fan who wants to send me an email and stake a claim. But don’t horse around if you’re interested because time is running out.
Thank you for reading this.

Robert Schuller introduces a perverse new approach to meals on wheels.
In the news today we find a story from Garden Grove, California, where members of the bankrupt Crystal Cathedral megachurch are screaming about the latest outrage. Ousted former pastor and TV evangelist Robert Schuller, a greedy old Einstein if ever there was one, sent an email to the entire congregation asking them to drop off prepared meals for his sick wife, Arvella, to a row of waiting limos parked in front of the church tower at 4:30 p.m. Please note: Mrs. Schuller does NOT want any stupid “get well” cards because she’s a very private person. Free food, however, is acceptable … as long as it’s low sodium with lots of meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables.
This appalling request comes just weeks after a lawsuit charging that Schuller and his relatives had been paying themselves lavish salaries and cash bonuses while the church sunk into a financial abyss. The Schullers drained more than $10 million from the Crystal Cathedral’s endowment fund while flying in private jets, driving around town in chauffeured limousines and living a life of opulence in their Laguna Beach estate.
The suggestion that Einsteins like this need a free tuna noodle casserole is beyond belief.
According to an additional report, Mrs. Schuller also is requesting a Rollex watch, beachfront property in Florida, ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a couple of thorobreds, new carpeting for the family room and live-in maid service so somebody can shove all those free meals into a microwave. Just no “get well” cards, please.

Twas the Night Before Macy’s.
Good morning one and y’all. It’s practically the crack of dawn and I just woke up extremely excited that Sam and I are shopping for new family room furniture tomorrow. Which brings to mind my favorite classic holiday poem …
And now, for your possible interest … here are the five “dancing sectionals” I can’t wait to test-drive on Saturday at Macy’s!
Please feel free to send an email and vote for your favorite, although — seriously — I really don’t care what anybody thinks except for Sam, because he’s paying.
I think I need more sleep. Thanks for stopping by. Next time, call first.
Marcy was nestled all snug in her bed,
While visions of sectionals danced in her head.

Musings from a Sam-less halva addict.
Poor Sam has worked a ginormous number of hours this week. Three nights in a row he got home at almost 4 a.m. and tonight won’t be much different, although he just called to tell me he THINKS he might be able to sneak out around 3. I’ve been spending a lot of time alone.
This means I’m currently unsupervised here with THREE HUGE CONTAINERS OF SUGAR-FREE MARBLE HALVA that arrived today in a carton from Amazon.com. Unfortunately, although it contains zero sugar it’s definitely NOT low-calorie or low-fat … and I just realized that I want to eat every glorious molecule of it TONIGHT. The situation is so serious I might have to call a halva hotline for emotional support. I tried hiding my paring knife, but that didn’t work because I keep remembering where I hid it. Also I have lots of other knives. And if I can’t find a knife I’ll just rip off little chunks with my teeth or bare hands like a cannibal.
Something peculiar happened last night during Bravo TV’s “Work of Art” … I found myself becoming slightly less repulsed by Sucklord. The artists/contestants had to work on a project with a group of children in an art program sponsored by the New York City public schools, and Sucklord ALMOST behaved like a rational person. His finished piece of artwork, however, was so atrocious that judge Jerry Saltz practically threatened to kill him. Okay, maybe that’s not quite accurate. Jerry actually said, “If you don’t stop with all the weird Star Wars crap I’m going to get medieval.” (I wonder if this includes torture.)
Sucklord is a strange, counter-culture geek who has a website with an online store that sells bizarre products under the “Suckadelic” brand name, two of which appear below. I have no idea how any of this can be considered ART or how Sucklord ever displayed enough talent at any level to qualify as a contestant.
Incidentally, the Super Suckmobile with Pimpin’ Jake is TEENY. Jake is about the size of a Playskool Weeble. (You should buy two. They’re only $125 each.)

Some sadness, some joy, and why the hell is anybody still interested in Rick Perry.
Some sadness. I’m hanging out with a small mountain of laundry and decided to spend a couple of hours crying in my beer — actually, a Marcy-tini — watching YouTube videos of Judy Collins and Joan Baez. There’s seriously no better backdrop for the reality of my 60th birthday than the music that propelled my generation in the 1960s. (I feel limp. I think I need some Cheetos.)
Some joy. Amazon.com just sent an email to let me know MY SUGAR-FREE HALVA HAS SHIPPED ALREADY and — gloriosky — it should be here TOMORROW. This is so exciting I almost can’t stand it. I’ve got my own OVERNIGHT HALVA SERVICE!
Why the hell is anybody still interested in Rick Perry.
No kidding, the First Bozo of Texas gets worse every time he opens his mouth. According to CNN’s James Carville, Perry is the worst debater ever to run for President, can’t give a decent speech, babbles mindlessly when he answers questions and can’t articulate a viewpoint the same way twice. He can’t run his state and he can’t even run his mouth.
And finally, here’s one last Rick Perry gem that pretty much dares you to write your own caption. I gave it my best shot …
Incidentally … “Top Chef Texas” premiers tonight on Bravo and I, for one, can’t wait to watch the latest crop of whiny, competitive cheftestants backstab each other over who’s got dibs on the blender. And this time they’ll be right here in the Lone Star State! Please plan to tune in. It comes on right after “Work of Art.”
L’chaim, and may y’all live and be well. Thank you for reading this.

Tuesday night announcements.
First, a brief retrospective concerning how I celebrated my 60th birthday. I had breakfast at Denny’s with Sam, baked a loaf of Jewish rye in my bread machine, ordered nice Chinese food for dinner and then for dessert I enjoyed a shopping extravaganza on Amazon.com that included four containers of Crystal Light lemonade drink mixes and a subscription to Golchin’s sugar-free marble halva. I’m particularly excited about the sugar-free halva, because until half an hour ago I didn’t know it even existed.
Second, Sam and I discovered another Denny’s Restaurant this morning that’s only five blocks from home. We’ve been driving past it at least three times a week for the last four and a half years AND NEVER NOTICED IT BEFORE. (Please don’t ask me to explain this.) We ate there this morning, and the restaurant was very nice with polite waitresses and much cleaner than the other two Denny’s we usually visit. The only downside is, this one still has a SMOKING SECTION — probably the last smoking section in the entire state of Texas — so the reception area smells like a cross between Motel 6 and the poker room in a casino.
And finally … I’ve got a very cool major event that I’d like to announce. Our adorable 11-year-old niece Anna has been chosen to dance in “The Nutcracker” with the Joffrey Ballet! Performances are the first week of December at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles, and we’re so excited for her we could bust. I’ll post pictures if David and Lisa will remember to send some.
Time to fold towels. Thank you for reading this.

Milestones and scrambled eggs.
I can’t think of a graceful way to make this kind of announcement so I’ll just blurt it out … I AM 60 YEARS OLD TODAY.
Let’s be honest about this … even though I still look like a girl of 55, turning 60 is a very big hoo-hah that gets you lots of useful perks. These include 20% off my dinner bill at Denny’s, a free hearing test at the Dunford Senior Center and an invitation to be screened for strokes and artery disease in the recreation hall at Mesquite Baptist Church with free coffee. I also drive around with my own handicapped tag, strangers like to hold doors open for me, I get to threaten sales clerks with my cane for better service and lately it’s gratifying to discover that I’m the same age as Wal-Mart greeters.
And if all this isn’t enough … a couple of days ago I get a card from my dentist offering me a free teeth whitening kit for my birthday. (This would be a swell gift if I didn’t wear DENTURES.)
Later this morning Sam and I will celebrate at Denny’s with our favorite breakfast from their senior menu. We get the Senior Scrambled Eggs (seriously, that’s what it’s called) which comes with bacon, sausage, a nice stack of pancakes and they even have sugar-free syrup. This is an excellent deal for $5.50 and we highly recommend it.
We canceled our order for the new family room furniture we picked out in mid-September. Whenever we called Haverty’s to check the status they’d change their story. First everything was supposed to deliver by mid-October. Then it was the END of October. But when Sam called yesterday for an update they begin the conversation by apologizing that the truck won’t get here until a few days before Thanksgiving. That pretty much ended it.
The good news is, Macy’s is having a huge furniture sale so we’ll give them a shot on Saturday. Stay tuned for further details. Shalom, y’all.

Halloween and other pointless pursuits.
Just in case you haven’t read enough stories this year about sickening excess, you might be interested to know that America’s Queen of Greed — reality TV star KIM KARDASHIAN — filed for divorce today after only two months of marriage. (My skin started to itch just thinking about this.)
At the end of August Kardashian’s $10 million over-the-top “fairytale” wedding to Kris Humphries was taped for broadcast on E! Entertainment Television with an estimated $15 million payout to the bride. She also sold exclusive rights to her wedding photos to “People” magazine for $2.5 million, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she refuses to return her 20-carat engagement ring and wedding gifts because I don’t think this third-rate bimbo has ever demonstrated a shred of decency in her entire life. (I sincerely hope that E! and “People” consider suing her for fraud.)
Kardashian is mostly famous for gigantic fake breasts, a face that looks like wax, her former friendship with Paris Hilton and a widely-circulated sex tape with an ex-boyfriend … all of which she parlayed successfully into THREE concurrent Kardashian-based reality series. And if that’s not obnoxious enough for you, she’s got two sisters and a mother all cut from the same creepy, overpriced cloth.
One final thought. According to TMZ Kardashian filed divorce papers after the couple had an argument — obviously the last straw! — about where to spend Halloween, and as mature, serious adults we all know that a meaningful holiday like Halloween would be a deal-breaker for ANY marriage.
And while I’m on the subject of Halloween …
Anybody who plans to come trick-or-treating here tonight please skip my house because I’m not opening the door, and I didn’t open the door LAST year, either. If your kids really can’t live without stale bubble gum and teeny boxes of Raisinets, please go to Wal-Mart and buy your own.
Tonight I plan to curl up in the family room with lemonade, a couple of Schwan’s tamales and my brand new 630-page Steve Jobs biography — with LOTS OF PICTURES! — that came a few days ago. I can’t wait to get started, so thank you for not annoying me.

Change the channel and pass the hot sauce.
Good news. I’ve finally recovered from the Texas Rangers’ loss to St. Louis in the World Series, and I can thank the Dallas Cowboys for that. Their amateur performance last night against the Philadelphia Eagles was so embarrassing it was like a high school game you hope your relatives forgot to attend … except in this case the Cowboys were on NATIONAL TELEVISION. They lost the game 34 to 7, with quarterback Tony Romo hurling passes into vacant air for the silliest performance of his career. Pictured below are the Cowboys’ highly paid strategists … head coach Jason Garrett (left) and premier doofus Rob Ryan, who needs to lay off the cheeseburgers. Or maybe he’s expecting twins.
Don’t tell anybody, but my birthday is coming up on Tuesday and we decided to celebrate yesterday because Sam works evenings during the week. So we went back to Mariano’s Hacienda for dinner, and it was awesome. And we had our favorite awesome waiter again, too … the entertaining Umberto, who refills water and ice tea with such speed and agility it should be an Olympic event.
And now I’d better wake Sam so we can go to bed. The lucky guy fell asleep during the Cowboys game and hasn’t moved an inch in more than two hours. Thank you for reading this and Happy Halloween. Boo, y’all.

Sunshine, leftovers and nausea, Texas style.
It’s official. Mom is flying home today, and Sam is driving her to the airport as I write this post. The autumn weather — 70° with sunshine — is perfect, there’s zero traffic and her flight is on time. The only thing that could be better is if mom decided to stay another week because she’s adorable … picture a miniature Sam with lipstick.
I haven’t commented on the World Series for the last couple of days because I’m still recovering from the frustration of it all. I’ve lived in several major cities in my lifetime and not one has ever produced a championship team. I refer mostly to the Chicago Cubs, the saddest story in baseball history. Their last World Series win was in 1908 … the same year that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in Bolivia, Henry Ford manufactured the first Model T and Henri Matisse opened his own art school in France.
And now I’m stuck with the Texas Rangers — our very own Chicago Cubs wannabes — who go down in flames after two consecutive American League pennants. I’m still slightly nauseated by the whole experience but not enough to actually skip lunch, which is at the top of my agenda as soon as I finish typing. I’ve got good leftovers today.
I guess that’s about it for now. I’m glad you stopped by. Next time bring chips.

Trick or treat: the worst Halloween candy ever.
With the American Dental Association’s favorite fall holiday less than 48 hours away I think it’s high time for a Howdygram exposé of the worst-ever Halloween candy … the useless, tasteless crap you refused to eat as a kid and nobody — not even your little sister — would trade for. The images below appear in no particular order.
Jawbreakers. Because everybody wants a ball of rock-hard sugar bigger than your actual mouth that takes three hours to eat. They have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Necco Wafers. They’re brittle disks of chalk that taste like cologne, deodorant, feminine hygiene spray and shoe polish, but health-conscious children everywhere should be happy to know Neccos are FAT FREE. At last count there are maybe four people in Indiana who actually eat these things.
Candy Corn. I definitely run a risk if I insult candy corn because Sam actually LOVES this stuff. Candy corn has the texture of candle wax and tastes like Glade vanilla air freshener and Easter Peeps made a flavor baby. This is very, very bad.
Good & Plenty. I never understood trying to disguise stale licorice bullets with pink and white sugar. My mother is only person I ever knew who ate these. She’s currently confined to a wheelchair and lives in a nursing home, so draw your own conclusions.
Circus Peanuts. I think these inedible monstrosities are already 35 years old when they come off the assembly line. They squeak like styrofoam when you squish them, look like misshapen suppositories and taste like crusty old marshmallows from a bag that somebody forgot to seal in the mid-1960s.
Dum Dums. The wrappers on these irritating little lollipops almost never come off so you usually get stuck eating most of the paper. This is actually more appealing than the candy itself, as Dum Dums come in a dozen flavors and they all taste equally lousy. Incidentally, I don’t think it’s a great idea to ever give these to children because if you fall down with a sucker in your mouth you’ll wind up sounding like Andy DeVine (see video below). My mother told me this when I was six and I still believe her. Seriously.
Spearmints. These belong in a jar at the register when you pay your bill at Denny’s, NOT in a Trick-or-Treat bag. Spearmints taste like toothpaste and most kids would rather eat cat poop.
Pastel Tootsie Rolls. Why would anybody think that non-chocolate, artificially-flavored Tootsie Rolls in Crayola colors would be a great idea for candy. The flavors are like Starbursts for sissies, only infinitely worse. The cherry ones remind me of cough syrup.
Mary Janes. They’re hard little slabs of linoleum with a flavor profile reminiscent of peanut butter spray-painted on a Tonka truck. By the time I was 10 years old Mary Janes had successfully pulled every filling out of my mouth and broken my braces twice. These work better as jawbreakers than actual jawbreakers. I hold the same high regard for Bit-o-Honeys.
Dots. Dots are basically little mounds of industrial-grade mucilage manufactured in attractive colors. Think of them as Jujubes on steroids.
It wasn’t my intention to include Jujubes in this review of Halloween candy, but these little indigestible acrylic nipples are so useless and obnoxious I think they deserve an honorable mention. My sister, a certifiable screwball whose “food issues” started in infancy, lived on Jujubes, white bread and canned shoestring potatoes for at least two decades. I know this for a fact because when she got married in 1974 and moved out of the house my mother discovered two dresser drawers filled with hundreds of empty Jujube boxes. I have no idea what this means. If Dr. Phil is reading this post maybe he could leave a comment.
Happy Halloween from the Howdygram, y’all.
