“Virginia Is For Lovers.” (Fetus lovers.)

In this post: Jerks and fetuses.

I couldn’t find a graceful segue from the subject of my last post — 1950s recipes from hell — into 21st century right-wing politics so I decided just to write another one. And this, dear friends, is it. Meet Virginia State Senator Steve Martin, another batshit crazy misogynist who’s living up to his state’s slogan: “Virginia Is For Lovers.” (FETUS lovers.)
After receiving a Valentine’s Day message from women’s health advocates urging him to support “access to [a] full range of reproductive health options — including preventing unintentional pregnancies, raising healthy children, and choosing safe, legal abortion,” an incensed Martin posted the following on his Facebook page:

You can count on me to never get in the way of you “preventing” an unintentional pregnancy. I’m not actually sure what that means, because if it’s “unintentional” you should have been trying to prevent it. And, I don’t expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. However, once a child does exist in your womb, I’m not going to assume a right to kill it just because the child’s host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn’t want it to remain alive.

What an outrageous expression of contempt for women! An unborn fetus is considered a human being but the pregnant woman is demoted to a DEHUMANIZED HOST, an incubator with no moral compass who shouldn’t have sex if she’s not ready for the consequences? HOLY CRAP.

Several hours later Martin edited his Facebook post to read “the bearer of the child” instead of “host,” which isn’t any better, but his sneering “some refer to them as mothers” is still unchanged even though every non-demented person on earth would refer to a woman who begat a child as a mother, not a “host” or “bearer.” Martin’s vile comments reveal how callously the far right has to detach from reality in order to accept the “personhood” view of fetuses.

Why don’t people like this ever get thrown from a speeding train? I’m just asking.
